Motor Starters

Motor starters are used to safely start, stop, and protect electric motors by controlling the power supply and providing overload protection. They typically include a contactor to handle the switching of high current and an overload relay to prevent motor damage due to excessive current draw. Motor starters are used in pumps, compressors, conveyors, and HVAC systems.

Available in manual or automatic configurations, they support both single-phase and three-phase motors.

What are three phase motor starters?

Three-phase motor starters are control devices designed to start, stop, and protect motors operating on three-phase power. They include a contactor for switching all three phases simultaneously and an overload relay to protect the motor from sustained overcurrent. Commonly used in industrial and commercial applications for motors above 1 HP.

How long do motor starters last?

Motor starter lifespan depends on duty cycle, load conditions, and environmental factors. Under normal operation, magnetic starters typically last 1–2 million mechanical operations. Contact wear or overload relay failure are common end-of-life points. Regular maintenance can extend service life.

What is the difference between NEMA and IEC motor starters?

NEMA motor starters are built to standardized, broad-use ratings with higher safety margins and are typically larger and more durable. IEC starters are compact, modular, and rated for specific application classes (e.g., AC-3 for squirrel cage motors). NEMA is common in North America; IEC is used globally and often in OEM equipment.

How do you size a motor starter?

Sizing is based on the motor’s full-load current (FLC), voltage, and horsepower. Select a contactor with a current rating at or above the FLC and an overload relay adjustable within the motor’s current range. Reference NEC 430 and manufacturer tables for proper selection.

Can a motor starter be used with a variable frequency drive (VFD)?

No. VFDs have built-in switching and overload protection, making motor starters unnecessary. Installing a starter between a VFD and motor can interfere with VFD output and cause damage. Use a VFD-rated disconnect or contactor only on the line side if needed for isolation.
